Virtual Program - If All Arkansas Read the Same Book
Please join us on Wednesday, July 15 and Thursday, July 16 at 2 p.m. for "If All Arkansas Read the Same Book" virtual programs with author, Kim Michele Richardson who wrote the book, "The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek." ArkansasLibrary2Go will be hosting this event for our area.
The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a historical novel based on the Pack Horse Library Project. The Pack Horse Library Project utilized librarians who delivered library materials to those who did not have access to libraries. This project started in Kentucky in 1913, died out in the 1920’s and was revived in 1935 as a part of the New Deal that President Roosevelt initiated. You can read more about this service in the link to the Smithsonian magazine article.
The main character of this book is Cussy. Cussy is a traveling librarian who makes it her mission to make sure the people of Troublesome Creek are not lacking books although they have to scrap for everything else. Along the way, Cussy is going to have to confront prejudice as old as the Appalachia Mountains and suspicion as deep as the holler if she wants to bring the joy of books to the Appalachian hill folks. According to Amazon.com The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a story of raw courage, fierce strength, and one woman’s belief that books can carry us anywhere—even back home.
Please enjoy reading the book and let us know what you think. This book is available through ArkansasLibrary2Go as a simultaneous check-out. This means people can check out the book even if others have checked it out. It is available for simultaneous check-out for one month beginning June 24.
